The Cheetham family

The Cheetham family have been farming at Haughton Park Farm since 1923. Thelma Cheetham started making her wonderful ice cream in the mid-eighties, using only natural ingredients and milk from the family’s herd of pedigree Friesians.

Fresh milk and double cream, straight from the neighbouring dairy, is pasteurised, cooled and refrigerated with other good ingredients such as unrefined cane sugar to produce the basic ice cream mixture. It is then left for several hours, further improving the quality. As the mixture is frozen natural flavourings are added. Local honey and quality local fruits, Belgian chocolate chunks, Australian diced ginger, hazel nuts and pistachio nuts, clotted cream fudge, ground coffee beans, liqueurs to name but a few.. The delicious hand finished ice cream is also suitable for vegetarians. This culminates in an unforgettable ice cream experience.

H&B Hawkes Ltd

Fruit & Vegetable Market - New Covent Garden Market - London

The company name H&B Hawkes can be traced back over 100 years to the time of Harry and Bert Hawkes who first started the company. Based in “ye olde Kings Crosse potatoe market” they supplied potatoes to most of North London, delivering each day by horse and cart. The potatoes used to come into Kings Cross railway station and the line passed the back of the warehouses where the potatoes were unloaded straight into the bays.

In 1962 John and Paddy Finn took over the company and over the past forty odd years they have taken to company to where it is now, a major fresh produce supplier to London and the Home Counties. Their first customer all those years ago was the then NHS, and we are still nominated suppliers to the NHS, constant for over forty years. Twenty years ago the company moved to New Covent Garden Market, and we have been based here ever since.

The Company is now run by John and Adrian Finn (John Finns Sons) and Simon Walliker (John’s brother in law). The company has been family run since its inception, with core family values as its ethos, quality of product and service are the essential ingredients that make the company tick and run as an efficient cost effective unit. With over 50 employees the company is a far cry from the horse and cart days of 70 years ago. A fleet of 25 modern temperature controlled vehicles deliver produce to the company’s client base that spreads from Margate to Basingstoke, from Brighton to Luton on a daily basis.

Documented purchasing policies ensure that the produce we supply is purchased from fully sustainable local growers wherever possible. We are members of the London Food Link and Sustain and we are fully aware of our responsibilities as a food procurement and distribution company, both to our clients and indeed our suppliers. Without them we would not be where we are today. We have a comprehensive selection of top quality UK product suppliers that we utilize as and when we can, season and price permitting. Being actually based in one of the most famous fresh produce markets in the world puts us at the forefront of the fresh produce supply and distribution trade. The produce comes into the market each morning, then to us and onto our clients all within the space of a few hours, it would be difficult to get any fresher produce on a daily basis.

Our client list is as extensive as the area that we cover, from the NHS through to the major Catering companies, universities, schools, many private catering companies and establishments, groups and individual gastropubs and many many more.

As a company we sponsor many charitable organizations, mostly local to our location in SW8, we also sponsor a youth rugby team, in fact one of our Directors is a Coach, the other a qualified rugby referee.

We have been ISO 9001:2000 accredited for over twelve years, indeed we were one of the very first companies in the fresh produce trade to attain such accreditation, and we remain proud of that fact. We are also STS approved suppliers which is the benchmark audit that allows nomination to be an NHS supplier. We work to a fully documented HACCP system, ensuring that environmental and quality targets are set, reached and surmounted on a regular basis. We are constantly looking to better the service that we provide to our customers, and the proof that we succeed in these aims is the fact that out turnover has increased each year for the last twenty years, we are expanding all the time, and we are taking our clients with
